PROJECT : JASON1 Glider Missions

The Glider Maya was recovered off the North Coast of Mallorca after completing a successful mission along the Jason-1 satellite altimetry track. The mission is part of the sustained observational programme framework carried out by IMEDEA (Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies) in the Balearic Sea.

The scientific and technological objectives are as follows:

  • Study of the mesoscale variability in the Baleraic Sea
  • Improvement of the coastal altimetry.

In addition, two deep Slocum Gliders (WILLY and WILLY-2) that have recently arrived from Webb Research Corp. (USA) were deployed in order to perform a series of test missions. The objective of these deployments was to test the Gliders’ hulls under pressure by diving in steps from the sea surface down to 600m (deep gliders can actually dive down to 1000m). Initial tests were successful. Deeper dives will be attempted in the following weeks.

During the recovery of MAYA and deployment of WILLY / WILLY-2, a team from the newly created Science Outreach Labs [SOL] (Enrique Vidal and Tomeu Cañellas, both PhD student at IMEDEA-TMOOS) performed live updates with images and commentary on twitter and the SOL facebook profiles.
